2025 St. Dismas Award Event
Each year, Dismas Ministry presents the St. Dismas Award to persons in recognition of their outstanding service to the incarcerated.
Celebrating a Legacy of Service: Reflections from the St. Dismas Award Celebration
On Saturday, March 22nd, Dismas Ministry held its annual St. Dismas Award Celebration, a day marked by community, faith, and recognition. This year, we had the honor of celebrating Father Chuck Canterna, a man whose 40 plus-year commitment to prison ministry has profoundly impacted countless lives—both inside and outside prison walls.
A Vibrant Celebration of Faith and Service
The event brought together over 200 people, a testament to the wide-reaching influence and beloved status of Father Chuck in our community. The Mass, a central part of the celebration, was concelebrated by seven priests, all close colleagues of Father Chuck throughout his ministry. Their collective presence underscored the deep respect and admiration for Father Chuck’s work and his enduring legacy in the ministry.
Father Leo’s Plating Grace Catering [provides job opportunities, skills training, and personal growth for returning citizens and those from disadvantaged communities as well as partnering with local charities to feed the homeless, creating opportunities that inspire stories of redemption and hope] provided a feast that was as delightful as it was memorable, leaving many guests inquiring about the caterer.
Huge Shoutout to St. Vincent de Paul
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the volunteers from St. Vincent de Paul, Judy, Peggy and Theresa, and especially to Tony, Nathan, and Colleen from the parish, whose tireless efforts made the event run seamlessly.
Inspirational Words and Heartfelt Tributes
The speeches were particularly moving, offering personal glimpses into the life and ministry of Father Chuck. Charlie Ponticelli, who nominated Father Chuck for this award, shared insights into the tangible impacts of Father Chuck’s work. John, Father Chuck’s brother, offered poignant stories that painted a vivid picture of their childhood and Father Chuck’s journey into and through his ministry, illustrating how it transformed not only his own life but also those around him.
Chris Patrick, a board member of Dismas Ministry and soon-to-be deacon, presented the St. Dismas Award in place of Father Fred Zagone, our Board President, who was unable to attend. His words added a special note of recognition and celebration for the tireless work Father Chuck has championed.
