Art Behind Bars

Kathleen Tyler, a prisoner in Iowa and long-time contributor to the I Am Beautiful project, recently gifted three new works of art to Dismas Ministry. These beautiful works of art (featured below) become the collection of Dismas Ministry along with dozens of others on display at our offices located on the campus of Cardinal Stritch University.  (See our Art Gallery webpage for more information.

Kathleen Tyler is a talented artist and has been featured in several volumes of our I Am Beautiful books – an anthology of writing and artwork contributed by and for other women prisoners who share histories of various types of abuse.

We are sharing an article about Kathleen Tyler and her life behind bars that was featured on NPR titled, “In Iowa, A Commitment To Make Prison Work Better For Women.” Follow this link to read the article about Kathleen.

We are grateful to all the women who have so bravely contributed their works of art for our I Am Beautiful book series.
