2026 St. Dismas Award Recipient

Dismas Ministry is pleased to announce that Deacon Mike Gutierrez of the Diocese of Tucson has been selected as the 2026 St. Dismas Award recipient.

This annual award recognizes individuals whose ministry reflects the mercy of Christ and the spirit of St. Dismas, and we are honored to recognize Deacon Mike for his remarkable dedication to those behind bars.

For more than fourteen years, Deacon Mike has served individuals who are incarcerated across southern Arizona, offering prayer, pastoral care, sacramental preparation, and a compassionate presence in five prisons and one jail. His commitment to showing God’s love to those often forgotten has made a profound impact on many lives throughout the region.

His nomination, submitted by longtime prison ministry volunteer Deborah Auclair, described him as a “faithful and tireless servant.” In a letter of support, Bishop Gerald Kicanas shared that Deacon Mike serves “with distinction” and is deeply respected by individuals who are incarcerated, volunteers, staff, chaplains, and prison administration. Their words reflect the deep admiration felt by those who serve alongside him.

We look forward to celebrating this well-deserved honor with the community in Tucson, Arizona on March 28, 2026.

This announcement is only a glimpse into Deacon Mike’s inspiring ministry. A full story highlighting his journey, his work, and the people he serves will be featured in our January newsletter.
